Root Canal Therapy

Root canals are typically recommended when the pulp or inner tissues have become infected or injured. Root canal treatments restore the tooth to its original function while preventing further damage. The key benefit is avoiding the need for a tooth extraction!

Root canal treatments are a type of endodontic therapy. Root canals are utilized when injury or decay reaches deep into the pulp or nerve tissue of the tooth past the outer enamel layer. If left untreated, the infection or disease causes the tooth to die, thus prompting the need for an extraction. The uncomfortable symptoms of nerve necrosis or abscess include swelling, sensitivity to hot or cold, throbbing, and severe pain.

To restore the health of the tooth and avoid extraction, our dentists will first remove the infected and injured nerve tissue tissues from inside the tooth. Then, the tooth is
cleaned and filled with a medicated material. This is typically completed in 1-2 visits.

At Zubkov Dental, we understand root canal treatments have a reputation for being extremely painful — however, they can now be performed with minimal discomfort thanks to the advanced technologies used in our office!

Upon completion of the root canal, a core buildup and dental crown are often recommended to protect and strengthen your tooth.

Periodontal Treatment (Gum Therapy)

Periodontal surgery is a dental procedure that is intended as the final step in treating periodontal or gum disease. Dr. Zubkov is also trained in periodontal surgery techniques that specialize in gums.

We recommend periodontal surgery when you have a pocket around a tooth or teeth that have gum disease that has not responded to scaling, root planing, or other treatments. If you have periodontitis and your pocket depths have not gotten better after multiple non-surgical treatments, then you are most likely a candidate for osseous surgery.

Periodontal Surgery

Dr. Zubkov is also in surgery techniques that specially target gum health! Periodontal surgery is often intended to be the final step in treating periodontal or gum disease — our team will always work with you to provide preventive measures and treatments to avoid surgery until absolutely necessary.

At Zubkov Dental, we recommend periodontal surgery to patients who have pockets around a tooth or teeth suffering gum disease. When the affected teeth have not responded to scaling, root planing, or other treatments, surgery will be the last recommendation. If you have periodontitis and your pocket depths have not gotten better after multiple non-surgical treatments, then you are most likely a candidate for osseous surgery.

Osseous Surgery

Osseous surgery is a procedure used to smooth and reshape the bone surrounded by the pocket. During this procedure, thorough cleaning of the root surface and smoothing of the surface of the affected uneven bone is performed, making it more difficult for bacteria to survive in the pocket.

Osseous surgery serves to eliminate existing bacteria and infection while stopping possible infection and the decaying of bone and halting any potential further damage to the teeth and gums from periodontal disease. Bad breath will be substantially reduced or eliminated while giving you a confident smile!

The entire procedure can be completed in one visit, usually under a couple of hours!

Periodontal Disease Scaling & Root Planing

Periodontal or gum disease occurs when bacteria in plaque cause your gums to pull away from your teeth, forming pockets. These pockets, if left untreated, will allow more and more bacteria to grow. Traditional brushing will not be able to reach the bacteria and so damage to your teeth occurs.

couple smiling after visiting the oral surgeon for a consultationChronic gum disease affects almost half of the population over the age of 30. Causes can include poor dental hygiene, aging, smoking, hormonal changes, poor nutrition, family history of gum disease, and other medical conditions.

Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Inflamed, red, or tender gums
  • Bad breath
  • Shifting permanent teeth
  • A change in your bite

We may recommend scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, to treat periodontal disease. Because these two procedures together are more in-depth and more effective than typical teeth cleaning, the entire procedure usually takes more than one visit to treat chronic periodontal disease based on the severity of the problem.

Together, scaling and root planing can help stop the harmful effects of gum disease and receding gums. Scaling and root planing will help keep the bacteria away from your teeth, helping you return to your happiest, healthiest smile!

Surgical Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions should be a last resort — at Zubkov Dental, we will do our best to explore all options to save your tooth or teeth before we recommend an extraction! Certain conditions may require an inevitable extraction of your tooth, including severely damaged teeth or wisdom teeth removal.

Our team will most likely recommend tooth extraction in the following circumstances:

  • Severe infection that has destroyed a significant portion of the tooth and supporting bone structure
  • Severe decay that has damaged a tooth beyond repair, making a successful restoration impossible
  • Wisdom teeth extraction

Because all tooth extractions are patient-specific, we will customize a care plan for your individual needs. Our goal is to make every patient's experience as comfortable and healthy as possible!

Laser Gingival Recontouring

We provide laser gingival recontouring to patients who have concerns about their gum lines when they smile. Using an advanced dental laser, our team will re-shape gum tissue to banish uneven gum lines and "gummy smiles." As an added bonus, this service can also promote healthier gums!
